      I have run 5 watts CW with no arcing. I don't think I can get much higher than that. In your case, there might have already been a defect or a bent plate?

  • @dadofmichelle
    @dadofmichelle 7 годин тому

    I think this would be easier if you simply attached two pieces of wire, 19" long, to the coax. Connect one to the shield and one to the center braid. Shield is hinky to work with - it stretches, and at the contact point, it can break off completely or develop an intermittent connection. I would only go through the stripping process if I had nothing else. If you have nothing but coax, You could also connect a 19" piece of center connector to the shield instead of using the shield as one leg of the dipole.

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb 5 годин тому

      Well obviously a dipole would be a better antenna for a permanent situation. This was just an idea for what you could do in an emergency situation where all you have is a piece of coax and no soldering iron.

    So would you ultimately like to have several coils on your board to choose from?

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb День тому

      Some automatic antenna tuners do just that, with 5 or 10 inductors and relays to switch them in one at a time or more than one at a time to increase inductance. But that gets pretty complicated. By using a multi-tapped coil, you are basically creating multiple coils in one.

    type 2 iron powder material perfect for straight inductors (for filters) on HF but its u factor not nearly high enough for balun use where you REALLY need the higher u of the ferrites (type 43 mix & that ilk). ... the type 2 material transformer impedance will not be high enough... especially for 300 ohm 4:1 use. This may have accounted for some of the folded dipole reduced performance.

    Just picked one of these up at a yard sale for $10. They had it marked as $8, but I just gave them a 10. Given they regularly go for $60 plus I think I did okay. Really appreciate the video, gives me an idea of what this little box of goodies is capable of! I figured it was largely worth it even for just the prototyping goodies and an Arduino of any kind.

    The application of filtering can be ac or dc. That shows different manufacturers applying the concept of what kind or where apply the filter. On the ac part or after been rectified has ac to dc voltage. Line noise or ripples on the voltage.

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb 9 днів тому

      Yes but that does not apply in a switching power supply. The line voltage ripple or frequency does not matter. In a linear power supply, the line voltage ripple comes through the transformer. In a switching power supply there's a separate oscillator that drives into the transformer. At a different frequency from the line voltage.

  • @jose-medero7746
    @jose-medero7746 10 днів тому

    I have one, the way it works is like this, voltage ac have 60hz and other country’s 50hz, that’s off set cleans the noise on the ac line coming to be rectified from ac to dc.

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb 9 днів тому

      No, it changes the oscillator frequency. In a switching power supply the incoming line frequency doesn't matter, an oscillator drives a power MOSFET into a transformer creating a higher frequency AC that is stepped up, and then rectified and regulated down. That oscillator being a square wave oscillator generates a lot of harmonics. The noise offset changes the frequency of the oscillator allowing you to move the noise away from the frequency you want to operate on.

    I must say, once you hooked up the 5/8 2 meter antenna, I was hoping you would try Six meters ? As if memory serves me, that antenna is around a quarter wave on Six ! So I was thinking maybe it would have been an easy match ? But perhaps outside your parameters of HF ? Still a nicely done tutorial ! Congratulations, and thank you for the down to Earth explanation ! If I could be critical, it was difficult for me to see the SWR Bridge ! Perhaps something to consider in the future ? '73 !

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb 10 днів тому

      I had a magmount 5/8 wave 2 m antenna then I would also use for 6 m because it was a good quarter wave on six. Didn't even need a tuner at the low end of 6 m

    The transistor that has blown is a fake from China, the offset printing is a give away, the real ones have the printing in the center of the transistor.

    • @loughkb
      @loughkb 11 днів тому

      So since the radio is all original from yaesu, you're suggesting that yaesu put fake parts in their product at time of manufacture. I highly doubt that. Anyway, there was service bulletins about the bias being set too high that I ran across while researching the problem.

    • @clivewiddus3953
      @clivewiddus3953 10 днів тому

      @@loughkb Yes, they could have been sold a bad batch of components, the description of these transistors blowing in very short periods of time in the video supports the fact that these are fake, running them with a Bias current of 3 amps in class A is very wasteful but no reason for them to blow. They are 100 Watt power Mosfets with a current handling of 25 amps, and can be run up to 175 C, the sort of temperature where the paint would burn off the top off the radio, and with a Drain to Source voltage of +-20 volts it difficult to see how you can over drive them from a 13.8v supply and also source to drain voltage of 50v which should not exceed 28v in the circuit they are used in which each transistor only has to produce a maximum of 50 watts for each transistor.

    I recently bought 135 feet of some very small 18 gauge wire, called, " Super Wire " off Amazon ! The idea was to string it up to use with a tiny short wave receiver ! Well after doing that, my mind began to wonder, and I remembered purchasing a QRP Tuner, that I had never used ! Probably been laying around for several years ? Found an old QRP Transceiver, (4Watts) and with a little ingenuity, I turned my iambic key on it's side, and used one of the paddles for a straight key ! Lol ! But it worked out pretty well ! Propagation report says 40 meters is poor, both Day and Night ! (Damn Sun ) But I didn't let that stop me ! Signals are in the crapper, but I still managed to work a docked Navy Nuclear ship in Maryland, from the Midwest, and Two West Virginia stations ! 539 and 559 ! Pretty incredible to me, especially with the band in such shape ! As for the Tuner, it had been so long since I purchased it, I had only a vague idea how it worked ? Once again, I didn't let that stop me ! Hi ..! First tuned it so LED was bright, then decided to go the other way, and things began to play ! Funny stuff ! But these Tuners are a breeze to tune ! You can be making contacts in no time ! And to think I let this little Gold Mine set for years ? But sadly I'm one of those guys that say, " I might need that someday " ? Today was my Day, I guess ? Now if I can get the Sun to cooperate ! 🌞((((( 🌎 '73 & Good Dx !

    I worked at Icom America in Tech support when Radio Shack introduced those radios. Before those came out Icom, Inc had private labeled the H and U16 for Midland as the 70-154 and 70-254, so we asked Icom, Inc if these were private labeled 02AT's for Radio Shack and was told no. I had a few conversations with callers who were disappointed Icom America would not repair the HTX-202. I did meet a Tandy Executive who had a had in the HTX-202 radio. I asked why the designed the batteries similar and other accessories. He said they wanted the radios buy not the accessories. Since I've had no experience with the HTX-202 I can not say the old Icom batteries work. It was a trying time to convince end users Icom America had nothing to do with radio. Good video.

As soon as you open it up and expose the inside to light, the components instantly shrink to the size of an ant's foot. Just a miracle how that works. So now there's even less margin to keep the smoke in!

      Throughout the radio, the PC boards are held in place with screws. Usually those are also ground points for the PC boards. You could have a loose screw somewhere and thus an intermittent ground. It might be worth taking the time to go through the whole radio and make sure that every screw is good and snug.

    The primary goal of the DMR standard is to specify a digital system with low complexity, low cost, and interoperability across brands, so radio communications purchasers are not locked into a proprietary solution. However, in practice, many vendors have introduced proprietary features that make their product offerings non-interoperable with other brands.

    Any thoughts of using 2 40 meter hamsticks in a dipole configuration mounted on a 6’ tripod. Thinking maybe for an emergency situation if local repeaters go down, hf as an alternative.

      Sure, there's even adapters made for that that I've seen. Not sure where to get them. The bandwidth will be somewhat narrow, so you'll have to retune the hamsticks if you want to go from the CW portion to the SSB portion of the band.
